My photographs visualize emotions through physical metaphors that bring forth what otherwise travels quietly within. The symbolism in my work spirals out of our most intimate natural environment, where intuition is a guiding force and emotions are embodied wisdom.
I see a difference between the power we have over our emotions versus their suppression. Guided by my introduction to psychology through in acting, I begin to create images by observing the movement of emotion within my own body, how they guide my behaviors and pour out into the outside world.
I produce my shoots in nature, bringing in figures, as an anchor for emotional symbolism. My poses put forth humans as a natural part of the world, strong, comfortable and capable, instead of our perceived fear, vulnerability and isolation. In my compositions I manipulate meaning through shifting sight and proportions and introducing foreign materials through props and set pieces I bring in. The resulting surreality inspires what a fairytale would, a suspension of disbelief that allows the viewer to similarly lift their guard.
I work with archival pigment printers to proof and print my photographs, observing color and composition directly on paper. I print my works from 8 to 80 inches and find it fascinating how attention and detail alter with the shrinking and expanding of each image.
I begin my photography education at a young age amongst a family of camera enthusiasts. I studied at Northwestern University, where I completed a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Art, Theory and Practice and Radio, Television and Film, as well as a minor in Theater. I am born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. I live and work in New Orleans, LA.
